New Research: One Question Can Help You Reach Today's Goals
According to new research from the University of Virginia, creating a realistic time budget is key to achieving daily goals and improving productivity.

Research from the University of Virginia (UVA) suggests that a single, simple question can significantly improve goal achievement. The study indicates that individuals who effectively budget their time accomplish more and feel greater satisfaction with their outcomes.
The research, based on 12 experiments, found that time budgeting forces people to confront the reality of task volume versus available time. Without a realistic time frame, individuals tend to overestimate what they can accomplish. This process helps in prioritizing and understanding which tasks are realistically achievable.
Sarah Memmi, an associate professor of commerce and marketing at UVA and lead author of the study, emphasizes the benefit of merging to-do lists with calendars. She describes time budgeting as a form of "reality therapy" that introduces realism into plans. Whether the schedule is followed precisely or time is tracked meticulously, better progress is reportedly made.
Techniques like time blocking support the study's findings. Even if schedules experience slippage, pre-budgeting time still aids in ensuring that the most important tasks get done. The research provides a scientific basis for time management strategies that focus on realistically assessing available time.
