New Service Offers Background Checks for Dating Partners

A new website called Stud or Dud, launched in beta by PeopleFinders on August 26, aims to simplify background checks for dating partners. The service compiles publicly available information, including court records and asset information, to offer users a more comprehensive view of potential or current dating matches.

Users can search for information using a name, phone number, or location. Stud or Dud aggregates public records, social signals, and other available details to help users see a bigger picture. Amber Higgins, CEO of PeopleFinders, stated that the service provides additional context before a meeting, but the ultimate judgment remains with the user.

Stud or Dud provides an initial report for free, but full findings require a paid subscription. Three plans are offered: a one-time search for $5, a monthly plan for $8.97 allowing up to 25 checks, and a higher-tier plan for $19.97 per month for insights on up to 25 individuals.

The service intends to reduce the time-consuming process of identifying red flags, an activity many daters already engage in online. A 2024 survey indicated that 64% of daters research potential partners online before meeting, with women (80%) being more likely to do so than men (49%). 15% of users reported having conducted background checks on their dates.
