New Study: AI Tools May Reduce Knowledge Diversity
A recent study suggests that the use of AI tools like ChatGPT for information retrieval could lead to 'knowledge collapse' by narrowing the range of information users encounter.

A new, large-scale study warns that the increasing use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, for information seeking may lead to a 'knowledge collapse.' The research indicates that these tools significantly narrow the diversity of information individuals encounter compared to traditional internet searches.
Dustin Wright, an assistant professor at Aalborg University and the study's lead author, explained that previously, people used search engines like Google to access a collection of web pages. 'There was not a single model that was as diverse as just doing a Google search,' Wright stated.
The study examined 'epistemic diversity,' which measures the breadth of information and claims encountered when a person queries an AI system about a topic. The findings suggest that AI tools might offer a more limited and less varied information set than what a user would obtain through conventional search methods.
The rapid integration of AI is outpacing the adoption of the internet, and its impact on information access is already substantial. Researchers highlight the need to further understand the implications of these tools on learning processes and knowledge acquisition.
