New Study Highlights Knowledge Gap in Long-Term Care Planning

Research conducted by the Leading Age LTSS Center at UMass Boston reveals a widespread misunderstanding regarding the funding and necessity of long-term care. According to the survey of 1,200 Californians over the age of 50, only 18% of respondents correctly identified that individuals are largely responsible for funding their own care, while 43% erroneously believed Medicare would cover these expenses.

To address this awareness deficit, the Certification for Long-Term Care (CLTC) has released a video series titled "When Life Has Other Plans." The series features testimonials from care professionals outlining the financial and personal consequences families face when they fail to plan for long-term health needs, such as dementia or stroke-related recovery.

CLTC Executive Director Amber Pate stated that the objective of the series is to encourage earlier family discussions regarding care options. By providing concrete examples of the financial erosion of retirement assets and the emotional strain on family members, the organization aims to demonstrate that proactive planning serves as a tool for maintaining independence.

The findings underscore the challenges posed by an aging population that remains largely underprepared for the costs associated with extended care. The CLTC program, which trains financial professionals in extended care planning, intends for these narratives to emphasize that effective management of care needs involves both financial strategies and family coordination.
