New Study Reveals Narwhal Tusk Has Double Spiral Structure
A new study has identified two embedded spirals within the narwhal's tusk. This finding offers fresh insights into the unique anatomy of the arctic marine mammal.

A new scientific paper published in Nature Communications has revealed an unexpected internal structure within the narwhal's tusk. Previously, it was understood that the tusk possessed a single, left-oriented spiral.
The research, however, has identified a second, internal spiral oriented in the opposite direction. This dual spiral structure had previously gone unnoticed.
The narwhal's tusk is actually the left upper canine tooth of male narwhals, erupting through the lip around two to three years of age and growing to lengths of 1.5 to 2 meters. Some males may develop two tusks, while in rare cases, they may have none at all.
There is a general scientific consensus that these tusks likely evolved through sexual selection as a form of social status. They are not crucial for survival, as females typically do not develop tusks, or have much smaller ones, despite generally living longer than males. The precise function of the tusk, however, remains a subject of considerable debate.
This discovery of a more complex internal structure could lead to a deeper understanding of narwhal evolution and the potential function of the tusk, although its ultimate purpose continues to be investigated.
