New Sunscreen Ingredient Approved in US After European Use

Bemotrizinol (BEMT), a sunscreen ingredient that has been available in Europe for over two decades, has finally received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The ingredient, in use across Europe since 1999, provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and is noted for causing little skin irritation, according to the Associated Press. Studies support BEMT's safety profile, with minimal absorption into the skin.

The lengthy approval process by the FDA contributed to the delay in its U.S. market entry. BEMT was first submitted for review in 2005, with final clearance granted in June. This marks the first new sunscreen ingredient permitted in the United States since the late 1990s.

Several brands have moved quickly to introduce products featuring BEMT. Australian brand Ultra Violette launched its products in late August, followed by Neutrogena in September with two new facial sunscreens. Early adopters are expected to incur a "BEMT tax" during an initial 18-month exclusivity period due to sourcing limitations from a few suppliers.
