A new surveillance system called SignalTrace, developed by security firm Leonardo, links signals from consumer devices like smartphones and smartwatches to vehicle license plate information. The technology works in conjunction with automatic license plate readers and sensors that detect nearby device signals.
The system is designed to identify groups of devices that regularly travel together, associating them with license plate records and location data. By analyzing repeated trips, the software can establish recurring electronic signatures linked to specific vehicles, enabling searches even without prior knowledge of a license plate number.
Leonardo states that the system can help authorities identify individuals by connecting device signals to past locations and vehicles. While a signal itself may not contain the owner's name, its previous association with a known vehicle provides investigators with an additional clue to identify the device's user.
