New Women's Professional Baseball League Launches

The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) commenced its inaugural season on August 1, 2024, marking the return of professional women's baseball in the United States for the first time in 72 years. The league unveiled its first four teams: San Francisco Firebells, New York Heights, Los Angeles Queens, and Boston Hunters, all named to honor historical female figures.

Founded by baseball coach Justine Siegal and sports investor Keith Stein, the WPBL was designed from the ground up with a single ownership model. This approach allowed organizers complete creative control over all elements, including team identities, branding, and market selection, aiming to establish a strong foundation before potentially bringing in individual team owners.

A key aspect of the league's foundation is its team naming convention, which pays tribute to influential women. The New York Heights honor civil rights leader Dorothy Height; the Boston Hunters are named for Dr. Harriot Kezia Hunt, considered one of America's first female physicians; the Los Angeles Queens are inspired by Lizzie Murphy, known as the "Queen of the Diamond"; and the San Francisco Firebells reference Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a notable patron of volunteer firefighters.

Canadian advertising agency Arrivals + Departures was tasked with creating the visual identities and uniforms for the four teams. Their designs draw inspiration from each city's sports teams, baseball traditions, and local aesthetics. For example, the New York Heights logo incorporates modernist architecture and baseball motion, while the Los Angeles Queens logo uses the geometry of a baseball field to form a crown-like shape.

The league's uniforms feature a traditional pants and shirt combination. With the teams now established and competition underway, the WPBL aims to build an immediate legacy and inspire future generations of athletes while providing a professional platform for women in baseball.
