New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has appointed four firms to design the visual identity for the city's five forthcoming municipal grocery stores, one for each borough. The objective is to create a brand that resonates with the city's diverse population and supports efforts to combat food insecurity.

The selected firms include Gander, serving as the project lead for strategy and brand development; Librarie, focusing on brand positioning and voice; Noble Signs, contributing expertise in New York City history and culture; and Seven Roots, advising on food retail operations and physical store integration.

In May, NYCEDC announced the opening of requests for proposals for the NYC Groceries initiative, aimed at improving food access. The project has been allocated $70 million from the city's capital budget. The first store, a 20,000-square-foot location in the Bronx, is expected to open by 2027.

These municipal grocery stores aim to make affordable food easily accessible across all boroughs. The initiative aligns with Mayor Zohran Mamdani's campaign promises, and its success is viewed as a crucial step in enhancing food accessibility in New York.
