The one-year moratorium, effective in the 2026-2027 school year, will impact approximately 600,000 public school students in grades 2 through 8.
The restrictions extend to teachers, barring them from using AI tools for grading assignments. The aim is to ensure students develop critical thinking and foundational skills before engaging with AI in their learning.
In addition to the AI ban for younger grades, the Department of Education is introducing further limits on digital device usage. A small pilot program for AI educational tools will also be launched.
