New York State to Distribute Energy Rebates Up to $200

New York State is set to begin distributing energy rebate checks of up to $200 to approximately 8.2 million households starting September 21. The initiative, part of the "Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate" (POWER) program, aims to offer financial relief to residents grappling with increased utility costs.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the upcoming distribution, emphasizing the program's role in supporting families facing rising energy bills. The state's Department of Taxation and Finance will administer the program, funded through the recently enacted budget.

The rebate amount varies based on tax filing status and adjusted gross income (AGI) for the 2024 tax year. Single filers with an AGI of $150,000 or less will receive $100. Joint filers with an AGI of $150,000 or less will receive $200, while joint filers with an AGI between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150.

Eligibility requires filing a New York State resident income tax return for 2024, being a full-time resident during that year, meeting the specified income thresholds, and not being claimed as a dependent. Recipients do not need to apply; the state will identify eligible individuals based on their tax filings.

The distribution of checks is scheduled to begin on September 21 and continue through December. The Department of Taxation and Finance has advised residents that mail delivery times may vary.
