New York's Last MetroCard Vending Machines Up for Auction

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has put its last remaining MetroCard vending machines up for online auction. Bidding is open until August 19, with all machines sold in non-operational condition and without any electronic components.

The MTA stopped selling and refilling MetroCards at the end of 2025, leading to the retirement of the vending machines. The auction features a limited number of the original machines, alongside the smaller MetroCard Express models that exclusively handled card payments.

Originally designed in 1999 by Masamichi Udagawa and Sigi Moeslinger, the machines are known for their sturdy, vandal-proof stainless steel casing. The original models stand 80 inches tall and weigh approximately 1,050 pounds, while the MetroCard Express versions are lighter at 210 pounds.

As New York City Transit transitions to a contactless tap-and-go payment system, these former ticket vendors represent a significant piece of the city's public transportation history. The machines are now available for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a nostalgic piece of urban infrastructure.
