Newlight Technologies and Prime Polymer develop dyeable polypropylene textile material

Newlight Technologies and Japanese manufacturer Prime Polymer have developed a new polypropylene-based material that addresses the long-standing limitation of poor dyeability in synthetic fibers. By combining Prime Polymer’s compounding technology with Newlight’s Aircarbon PHB, a material derived from a microbial process, the companies have created a polymer that functions like polyester in textile dye baths.

Polypropylene is valued for its low weight and moisture management, but has traditionally been difficult to color using standard industry equipment. This new alloy allows manufacturers to integrate the fiber into existing textile supply chains without requiring specialized dye systems, potentially increasing its market share in the performance apparel and footwear sectors.

Global brands are currently evaluating the material for use in commercial products. Both companies are now working with industry partners to move the material from the testing phase to mass production, targeting applications that prioritize weight reduction and improved environmental footprints.
