Nexans Advances Key Stage in Malta-Sicily Interconnector Project

Cable manufacturer Nexans has reached a significant milestone in the second Malta-Sicily Interconnector project, with production now progressing at its facilities in Norway and the United States.

The Rognan plant in Norway has commenced manufacturing of the fibre optic elements. These components will be integrated into the 104-kilometer high-voltage subsea cable designed to link Malta to the European energy grid via Sicily. Nearly half of the required fibre optic cable has been produced and shipped to Nexans’ Charleston, South Carolina facility for ongoing subsea cable production and testing.

Formally contracted in April 2025, the project is designated as an Operation of Strategic Importance by the Maltese Government and supported by the EU's ERDF program. Upon completion, the 245 kV submarine cable will double Malta’s interconnection capacity, bolster the island nation's energy security, facilitate greater renewable energy integration, and is projected to avoid approximately 13.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over its lifespan.

Nexans states the project demonstrates its global capabilities and expertise in subsea cable technology for critical infrastructure that supports energy security and the energy transition.
