Nexans commissions first DC microgrid at Lyon research center
Nexans has activated its first direct current (DC) microgrid at its AmpaCity research facility in Lyon, France. The initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency in buildings.

Nexans announced on July 21, 2026, the commissioning of its first direct current (DC) microgrid at its AmpaCity research center in Lyon. The event, attended by energy sector leaders, showcased DC applications in buildings and underscored Nexans' role in the energy transition infrastructure.
Current alternating current (AC) grids face limits as approximately 70% of devices within buildings operate natively on DC. Traditional AC distribution requires multiple energy-intensive conversion steps, leading to potential energy losses of up to 20%. DC technology bypasses these conversions, simplifying cabling and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources.
The AmpaCity DC microgrid, developed in collaboration with Schneider Electric and VINCI Energies, utilizes a 700 VDC main bus. It powers workstations, lighting, a battery storage system, and two electric vehicle fast-charging stations. Nexans' DC Series cable range is designed for rapid installation, safety, and interoperability.
Future plans for AmpaCity include the integration of solar panels. The validated 800 VDC architecture is also positioned to address the significant energy demands of data centers, improving Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) by reducing conversion losses and minimizing copper requirements. Nexans is also exploring the integration of High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cables with 800 VDC distribution for near-lossless power transmission.
