Nexans develops cable prototype from 100% recycled materials
Nexans has developed a prototype electric cable made entirely from recycled materials, a company first. The innovation significantly reduces manufacturing-phase greenhouse gas emissions.
Cable manufacturer Nexans has announced the development of a prototype electric cable composed of 100% recycled materials, including copper and plastics. This represents a significant step in the company's circular economy initiatives.
The development involved a global effort, with recycled copper sourced from a partner in China. Material extrusion was carried out in France, and the final assembly of a 3G2.5 cable prototype was completed at the Nexans Technocenter in Lyon.
A life cycle analysis compared the new prototype against a standard cable made from virgin materials. The results indicate a 76% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions during the manufacturing phase, alongside improvements in resource depletion and freshwater usage indicators.
Nexans stated the innovation demonstrates technical feasibility while maintaining quality and safety standards. The company aims to integrate 25% recycled copper into its cable production by 2028, supporting its broader sustainability roadmap.
