Nexans Installs World's Deepest Subsea Cable on Tyrrhenian Link Project
Nexans has achieved a world record by installing a high-voltage subsea cable at a depth of 2,150 meters on the Tyrrhenian Link project in Italy. The cable installation phase concluded in January 2026.

Cable manufacturer Nexans has set a world record by installing a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable at an unprecedented depth of 2,150 meters as part of the Tyrrhenian Link project in Italy. The final successful installation conclusion was marked in January 2026, extending the company's capabilities in subsea cable laying.
The project involved laying approximately 480 kilometers of 500 kV HVDC subsea cable connecting mainland Italy to Sardinia. This section is part of a larger 970-kilometer interconnection designed to transmit 1,000 MW, enhancing the stability and security of Italy's national electricity grid.
Installation at this exceptional depth required significant engineering precision, manufacturing expertise, and highly disciplined offshore operations. Nexans highlighted the role of its vessel, the Nexans Aurora, in executing these challenging conditions. The work was conducted for Terna, Italy's transmission system operator.
The completion of the high-voltage subsea cable installation on the Tyrrhenian Link demonstrates Nexans' capacity to undertake complex deep-water projects with technical and operational rigor. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the company's subsea cable division.
