Nexans selected for power cable interconnection between Mallorca and Menorca
Red Eléctrica has named Nexans as the preferred supplier for a new 132 kV power cable project to enhance grid stability and reduce fossil fuel dependency in the Balearic Islands.

Nexans has been selected by Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Spain's Redeia, as the preferred supplier for the Mallorca-Menorca 3 interconnection project. This infrastructure development aims to improve the security and resilience of the electricity supply across the Balearic Islands.
The agreement triggers a six-month engineering phase, which serves as a precursor to a formal Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) contract. The project involves the deployment of a 132 kV HVAC cable link that connects the two islands, a move expected to significantly lower Menorca's reliance on fossil-fuel-based electricity generation.
Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President of Transmission at Nexans, indicated that the project leverages the company’s existing expertise in complex subsea and land-based interconnection. With the engineering phase underway, project delivery is slated to begin by mid-2027.
