Cable manufacturer Nexans has been awarded a significant contract by a leading Italian power utility to supply 6,000 kilometers of low- and medium-voltage power distribution cables and services. The agreement, which begins in February 2024 and lasts for 16 months, is designed to support Italy's energy transition and modernize its electricity networks.

Nexans stated the contract reinforces its position as a long-term partner to the utility and a key player in sustainable electrification. The cables will be manufactured at Nexans' Italian plant in Battipaglia, utilizing 100% low-carbon aluminum. This material choice is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% to 50% compared to conventional products.

The supplied cables are intended for underground installations, enhancing resilience against increasingly frequent extreme weather events impacting power distribution infrastructure globally. The contract also includes Nexans' ULTRACKER DRUMS solution, which uses edge-computing technology for real-time geolocation and management of cable drums on site, offering benefits such as shipment tracking and theft detection.

Global investments in electricity grids are projected to reach approximately €4.4 trillion by 2030, driven by electrification and the growth of renewable energies. Nexans aims to support this development by providing integrated solutions for grid modernization and electrification projects.
