A camouflaged prototype of the next-generation, all-electric BMW X5 M (G95) has been spotted during road testing in Germany, offering a glimpse of the vehicle's future design and performance enhancements. The model is anticipated to go on sale in 2028.

The prototype reveals notable changes to the front fascia. Unlike the slimmer, closed kidney grilles seen on models like the iX3 and iX5, this test vehicle features a more three-dimensional and prominent grille. This distinctive front-end design is intended to set the high-performance electric M SUV apart from other "Neue Klasse" SUVs. While the grille remains closed for aerodynamic efficiency suitable for an EV, the lower front bumper incorporates larger, more aggressive air intakes, suggesting a need for enhanced cooling for the battery, electric motors, and braking system.

At the rear, the vehicle appears to have an added spoiler above the existing one and a more athletic rear bumper design compared to current G65 series models. It is expected to adopt BMW M's signature "M Yellow Lights" for daytime running lights, further distinguishing it from lower-spec M models.

The powertrain is expected to receive substantial upgrades, potentially featuring a quad-motor setup where each wheel is driven independently and managed by BMW's M eDrive software, eliminating traditional mechanical differentials. This configuration is rumored to produce between 800 and 900 horsepower, significantly exceeding the output of current internal combustion M models. High-performance braking systems, including drilled rotors and likely optional carbon-ceramic brakes indicated by blue calipers, are evident.

The battery is expected to utilize the same roughly 147.8 kWh capacity as the standard X5, integrated into an 800-volt architecture with Cell-to-Pack technology. BMW plans to retain the X5 M nameplate for this electric performance variant, foregoing an "i" prefix in line with the M division's strategy for electric performance vehicles. The upcoming X5 generation will feature a diverse range of powertrains, including fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion options. The G95 electric X5 M is slated for production to begin around 2028, launching as one of the final additions to this X5 generation.
