India's National Highways Authority (NHAI), the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), and Mumbai Metro are significantly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) across their operations. These applications were highlighted at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.

The NHAI employs AI throughout the entire lifecycle of road projects, from planning and construction to maintenance. AI analyzes drone-captured imagery to monitor 52 parameters, including construction progress and plantation status. The system also facilitates vehicle number plate recognition for FASTag toll payments, effectively minimizing revenue leakage. Additionally, AI assists in optimizing annual pass pricing and rapidly auditing road signage requirements, a task that previously took teams days.

GSTN utilizes AI primarily for processing vast amounts of data. AI enables the extraction of information from unstructured taxpayer documents and accelerates software development, testing, and documentation. The organization is also investing in AI-driven cybersecurity to bolster defenses against attacks. Multilingual AI is expected to reduce compliance costs for small businesses.

Mumbai Metro is using AI to monitor train pantographs, critical components for supplying electricity to coaches. This AI-powered oversight replaces a previously slow, manual inspection process, significantly enhancing maintenance efficiency.

During the event, Google also introduced new open protocols for agent-based commerce, designed to ease integration for smaller businesses with larger enterprises. The implementation of Google's Gemini platform by Tata was cited, which reportedly brought substantial efficiency gains to its commercial operations.
