NHTSA Investigates Comma.ai After Crashes Involving Its Driver Assist Devices
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating comma.ai's aftermarket driver assist devices following five crashes, including two fatal incidents, that resulted in deaths and injuries.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into comma.ai's driver assistance systems. The inquiry focuses on aftermarket devices that augment a vehicle's built-in advanced driver assistance features. NHTSA cited five crashes where drivers using comma.ai devices reportedly collided with stopped or slow-moving vehicles.
These incidents have resulted in a total of three fatalities and 11 injuries across four of the five reported crashes, some of which were severe. The investigation by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation will examine the safety performance of comma.ai's technology in real-world driving conditions.
Comma.ai, founded by George Hotz, emerged in the mid-2010s with ambitions to develop advanced driver assistance systems. Hotz, previously known for hacking consumer electronics, aimed to create systems that allowed for hands-off driving. The company's products are designed to be installed by consumers on compatible vehicles.
This investigation highlights ongoing scrutiny of semi-autonomous driving technology and its integration into consumer vehicles. Regulators worldwide are increasingly focused on the safety and reliability of such systems as they become more prevalent on public roads.
