NIB provides SEK 1 billion loan for Stockholm grid expansion
The Nordic Investment Bank is financing the modernization of Ellevio AB's Beckomberga substation to support increasing electricity demand in Stockholm.
The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) has signed a SEK 1 billion (EUR 90.6 million) loan agreement with the Swedish grid operator Ellevio AB. The capital will support the modernization and expansion of the Beckomberga substation, a critical node in Stockholm’s regional power network.
Currently, the facility provides electricity to roughly 120,000 customers. As the station has reached the end of its technical lifespan, the project is necessary to maintain supply reliability. The upgrade will add 550 MW of capacity, allowing the grid to accommodate rising energy demand resulting from regional urban growth.
The project includes extensive reconstruction and physical expansion of the site. This investment marks a strategic step toward ensuring the long-term functionality of Stockholm's electrical infrastructure.
