Niedersachsen faces heatwave: Storms and health risks loom
Niedersachsen continues to experience extreme heat, straining emergency rooms and prompting aid for the homeless. Thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday.

The German state of Niedersachsen is grappling with a severe heatwave, leading to an increase in patients presenting with heat-related illnesses at emergency departments. Individuals with mobility issues and athletes have been particularly affected by dehydration and overheating.
Medical staff at emergency rooms report that while the number of patients is not higher than in previous years, there is an increase in circulatory problems, dehydration, and heatstroke during the current hot spell. The number of accidents involving e-scooters and cyclists, as well as sports-related injuries, has also risen, attributed to increased activity and reduced attention due to the heat.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the effects of the heat. Aid organizations are distributing water, refillable bottles, sunscreen, and insect repellent to homeless individuals, many of whom cannot afford these essential items themselves.
Weather forecasts predict continued extremely high temperatures, potentially reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius inland. Thunderstorms are expected to develop on Saturday, which could bring some relief as they spread. NDR is providing ongoing coverage of the weather situation and its impact.
