NIH to Fund Department of Defense Research Projects

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reached an agreement with the Department of Defense (DoD) to use some of its budget for DoD research initiatives. The agreement was confirmed recently, approximately one month after its signing.
The funding transfer is designated for projects supporting the advanced development of medical countermeasures against pandemic influenza, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, and emerging infectious diseases. The money will come from the budget of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which has an allocation of $6.6 billion for 2026. The pact is set to last for ten years.
The exact amount of NIAID funds to be transferred to the DoD remains unspecified. Reports suggest the DoD initially sought up to a third of the NIAID budget, but is likely to receive around 10 percent. This comes amid significant budget disparities, with the DoD's budget approximately $1 trillion for 2026.
The arrangement is notable as NIH has faced challenges in fully utilizing its allocated funds for grants. The DoD's budget is also under strain due to ongoing global conflicts.
