Nikon disqualifies microscopic video contest winner for AI use

Nikon has disqualified the original first-place winner of its Small World in Motion contest due to the use of generative AI in post-processing. The competition's rules prohibit the use of AI in the creation or manipulation of submitted works.

The video, submitted by Dr. Ning Xu, originally claimed to depict "tiny, hair-like structures called cilia moving in the airway of a child with the respiratory condition PCD." Following online skepticism regarding its authenticity, Nikon initiated a review of the submission.

Dr. Xu admitted on social media to using an "unsupervised neural-network method" for AI-assisted post-processing to enhance visualization. Nikon stated that the violation of "rules regarding generative AI" led to the disqualification.

Nikon is reportedly reviewing other entries to select new winners. The Nikon Small World contest has been awarding excellence in scientific and microscopic imaging since 1975.
