Nikon ZR Camera Firmware Updates to Enhance Video Capabilities
Nikon announced firmware updates for its ZR full-frame camera, focusing on enhanced video recording features. The updates are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027.
Nikon has announced that it is developing new firmware for its full-frame Z CINEMA series ZR camera. The upcoming updates aim to introduce significant enhancements to the camera's video recording capabilities, targeting professional videographers.
The first major update, firmware version 2.00, is slated for release within 2026. This update is expected to add support for Log3G10 curve and REDWideGamutRGB color space when recording in H.265 format. These features are designed to provide smaller file sizes while offering greater grading flexibility. The firmware will also allow users to adjust the level of high ISO noise reduction during H.265 Log recording, giving creators more control over image rendering. Additionally, focus peaking will be displayed during R3D NE format recording, enabling more precise focus confirmation.
Further enhancements are planned for release in 2027. These include user-requested features such as "open gate" recording, which utilizes the entire sensor for video capture, and "anamorphic desqueeze" display functionality for anamorphic lenses. These additions are intended to meet the evolving needs of professional production workflows.
Nikon also stated that its RED CONTROL CN remote application will be updated, which will enable remote control functionality for the ZR camera in the future. Specific release dates and further details on the capabilities are expected to be announced later.
