Japan's National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and Switzerland's Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) have entered into a five-year collaborative agreement to co-publish the open-access journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM).

The collaboration aims to establish STAM as a leading international publication in materials science. Founded in 2000, the journal provides a platform for peer-reviewed contributions and reviews across all areas of materials science, including advancements in solids, liquids, and colloids, as well as emerging fields like nanomaterials, biomaterials, and ecomaterials.

Empa joined NIMS in the journal's editorial management in January 2014. Empa's CEO, Gian Luca Bona, will serve as a regional editor, and Harald Krug, a member of Empa's Board of Directors, will become the new co-editor-in-chief. Empa will also establish a STAM editorial office in Switzerland, serving as the journal's European hub.

The agreement is expected to provide further momentum and opportunities for the journal's development, increasing its visibility in Europe and attracting new authors and reviewers. The partnership between these leading materials science research institutes in Japan and Switzerland aims to strengthen STAM's global standing in the field.
