Nintendo opts for original zone-based map design in Ocarina of Time remake

Nintendo confirms the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will maintain the original's segmented map structure rather than adopting a seamless open-world format.

Nintendo has released development details regarding the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, confirming that the title will not transition to the open-world structure seen in recent entries like Breath of the Wild. Instead, the developers have prioritized maintaining the segmented map design and pacing of the original game.

According to producer Wu Xuewei, the team views the distinct zones and the transitions between them as fundamental to the gameplay experience. By opting against a seamless world, the developers aim to preserve the specific rhythm of exploration and the sense of anticipation created when moving between diverse regions, such as forests and plains. The team tested a fast-travel feature but ultimately removed it, concluding that it reduced opportunities for discovery.

The visual approach aims to utilize modern hardware to add depth and texture to the world without abandoning the original's aesthetic identity. Development focuses on balancing environmental detail in accessible areas with background imagery, ensuring that landmarks remain identifiable and that the environment provides organic cues for player interaction.
