Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers Feature Removable Batteries
Nintendo has revealed the internal design of new Switch Joy-Con controllers, featuring easily replaceable batteries. This change aligns with upcoming EU regulations regarding consumer electronics.

Nintendo has disclosed the internal structure of its updated Switch Joy-Con controllers, which now incorporate a design allowing for battery removal and replacement. This adjustment is in response to the European Union's 2023 Battery Regulation, mandating that built-in batteries in consumer products must be simpler to replace starting in 2027.
The company announced plans to introduce several revised products in Europe to comply with these new requirements. These include the Switch 2 console, scheduled for this fall, and updated Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro controllers to be released in winter.
The redesigned Joy-Cons, set to launch for European consumers this winter, feature a user-replaceable battery. However, direct removal during regular use is not intended. Battery replacement will necessitate obtaining a specific kit from Nintendo, which includes a new battery and necessary tools, such as a PH00 screwdriver and a plastic prying tool.
Opening the controller involves removing four screws on the back, carefully prying open the casing, disconnecting the battery cable, and then installing the new battery. Nintendo states that the battery itself remains the same as in previous models. The Switch 2 console's battery capacity will see a minor decrease of about 1%, while the Switch 2 Pro controller's capacity will be reduced by approximately 16% compared to its predecessor.
