Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto: AI Will Not Replace Human Creativity

Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto frames generative AI as a tool that highlights the importance of human vision in game development.

24 October 2026

Shigeru Miyamoto, the veteran designer and creative advisor at Nintendo, has stated that generative artificial intelligence will not replace human creativity in game development. Addressing the rise of new tools, Miyamoto noted that the technology is a progression similar to the historical shift from typewriters to word processors.

Miyamoto argues that as AI automates more technical tasks, the importance of a designer’s original vision and intent becomes more prominent. He warns that because modern tools lower the barrier to entry, there is a risk that developers may equate the satisfaction of the production process with the quality of the final product. He views the rise of AI as an opportunity for creators to refocus on what actually defines their work.

While Nintendo has not explicitly disclosed its stance on integrating AI into its production pipeline, Miyamoto suggests that technology remains merely an instrument. He maintains that while AI can assist in the creation of content, the unique intent behind the design remains a distinctly human contribution that is essential for enduring creative work.
