NIO Recalls 686 Electric Cars Over Steering System Fault
NIO is recalling 686 "Firefly" electric vehicles due to a manufacturing defect that can cause a fault in the electronic power steering system. The issue may lead to the activation of a warning light and loss of steering assistance.
Chinese automaker NIO is initiating a recall for 686 units of its "Firefly" electric model, citing a manufacturing anomaly. The recall affects vehicles produced between March 20 and April 2, 2026.
The defect involves potential interference between the torque sensor wiring harness and the sensor rotor within the steering column. In extreme scenarios, this interference can lead to abnormal sensor signals, causing the electronic steering system's warning light to illuminate and resulting in the failure of steering assistance. NIO has reported this issue to regulatory authorities, identifying it as a safety hazard.
NIO will offer a complimentary inspection and repair for all affected vehicles. If interference is detected, the faulty sensor wiring harness will be replaced. Vehicles that have already undergone relevant repairs may not require further service.
The recall commences immediately, with NIO having filed the necessary plan with China's State Administration for Market Regulation.
