Nissan to Retire Altima Sedan After 2027 Model Year

Nissan is retiring its Altima sedan after the 2027 model year, ending production of the nearly 35-year-old vehicle. The automaker had previously planned to cease Altima production after the 2025 model year but opted for a one-year extension.

Industry sources indicate that a Nissan executive confirmed the end-of-line for the once-popular midsize sedan. The Altima's discontinuation will leave the Sentra as Nissan's sole sedan offering in the U.S. market. The decision to extend the Altima's life was made after Nissan canceled plans for U.S.-manufactured electric sedans.

"The Nissan Altima remains an important part of our lineup, meeting the needs of sedan buyers today," a company spokesperson stated. "We continue to see strong customer interest and later this year we will introduce a 2027 model year."

The first Altima was produced in 1992 at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant. Over its production run, the model evolved from a compact car into a midsize sedan known for its features, including advanced engines and comfort-oriented seating. The current 2026 Altima features a streamlined trim lineup and updated styling and technology packages.
