Noctua Finds Discrepancies in PC Case CPU Cooler Height Specifications
CPU cooler manufacturer Noctua has manually measured over 100 PC cases and found that 56 of them exhibit deviations from the manufacturer-specified CPU cooler height limits.
Noctua, a company specializing in CPU coolers, has released findings from its recent testing of over 100 PC cases. The company reports that 56 of these cases show discrepancies between the manufacturer-specified maximum CPU cooler height and the actual measured clearance.
The initiative aims to assist PC builders in accurately assessing cooler compatibility. Noctua has created a database detailing which of its own cooler models fit within each tested case. While the database primarily serves Noctua products, the manual measurement data can also help users evaluate the compatibility of coolers from other brands.
These measurements reveal that the actual available space can sometimes exceed or fall short of the stated specifications. In some instances, cases offer more clearance than advertised, potentially allowing for the installation of larger or more powerful coolers. For example, the NZXT H2 Flow case measured with 79mm of clearance, surpassing the stated 75mm, which could enable the installation of a cooler otherwise deemed incompatible.
Conversely, Noctua also identified cases where the actual clearance was less than specified. The ASUS Prime AP201, stated to support coolers up to 170mm, was measured by Noctua to have only 168.3mm of clearance. This difference might prevent the installation of certain high-end tower coolers or restrict RAM module height.
Noctua highlights that accurate cooler height clearance is particularly critical in Small Form Factor (SFF) and ITX builds. The company's manual measurement project seeks to reduce the risk of consumers purchasing incompatible CPU coolers.
