Nokia Advances 5G-Advanced Multicast for Public Safety Services

Nokia Oyj is advancing the development of 5G-Advanced network technology, specifically focusing on enhancing multicast capabilities to support public safety services. The aim is to ensure reliable and efficient data transmission during emergency scenarios where simultaneous content delivery to multiple users is critical.

The new features are designed to enable faster and more stable data transfer for use cases such as emergency personnel streaming real-time video from drones or body cameras. The 5G-Advanced multicast functionalities are standardized to support mission-critical services that require low latency and resource efficiency.

Nokia's contributions to the 5G-Advanced Multicast and Broadcast Services (MBS) standards focus on improving transmission speed and reliability. This includes session setup and modification times below 100 milliseconds, uninterrupted data delivery for users on the move between base stations, and rapid, spectrum-efficient operation under changing network conditions.

Furthermore, the standards support service scalability for large numbers of users, which is essential during major incidents or disasters. Nokia has emphasized a lean and flexible network architecture to ensure efficient multicast data delivery, even in mixed networks where some base stations may not directly support MBS functions.
