Nokia and Blackned to Develop Tactical 5G Networks for Defense
Blackned, in which Rheinmetall holds a majority stake, and Nokia have signed a memorandum of understanding to create next-generation deployable tactical networks for the defense industry.

Düsseldorf – Blackned GmbH, a company in which the technology group Rheinmetall holds a 51% stake, and Nokia have entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop advanced deployable tactical networks for the defense sector, the companies announced. The partnership aims to provide secure and reliable communication solutions for military operations in the field.
The collaboration combines Nokia's 5G technology with Blackned's expertise in defense digitalization. The goal is to create high-performance, scalable tactical communication systems that can be rapidly deployed in battlefield environments. The systems will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of Germany's defense needs, while also being adaptable for international use.
Under the agreement, the companies will integrate their respective product portfolios to design a unique system. This system will be an integrated component of Rheinmetall's Battlesuite. Deployable tactical networks are crucial for modern warfare, enabling continuous connectivity and high data rates, thereby enhancing situational awareness and speeding up decision-making on the battlefield.
"Together, we will deliver powerful, flexible, and future-ready tactical network solutions built for the realities of modern defense," said Timo Zaiser, CTO at Blackned GmbH. Giuseppe Targia from Nokia added that their 5G technology will empower defense forces to swiftly implement robust communication capabilities and share intelligence more effectively.
