Nokia and Google test network slicing technology for Android devices

Nokia and Google have successfully trialed network slicing functionality using UE Route Selection Policy (URSP) technology on Android 13-powered Google Pixel 6 devices. The trials, conducted at Nokia’s facility in Tampere, Finland, demonstrated the ability for a smartphone to connect to multiple network slices simultaneously.

The implementation of URSP allows mobile devices to dynamically assign traffic to specific network slices based on the requirements of individual applications. This approach enables operators to provide dedicated network conditions—such as varying levels of latency, security, or throughput—for different enterprise or consumer tasks, like isolating business data from general web browsing while on the same device.

The trial also verified LTE and 5G New Radio interworking, aiming to help operators maximize their existing infrastructure. By automating the selection process, Nokia seeks to assist mobile operators in deploying new, service-specific 5G offerings that rely on precise resource allocation.
