Nokia and Kongsberg to Enhance Defense Communications with 5G Technology
Nokia and Norway-based Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on advanced tactical communications solutions for the defense sector using 5G technology.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing tactical communications solutions for the defense industry. The collaboration fuses Kongsberg’s expertise in military tactical communications with Nokia’s leadership in commercial 4G, 5G, and private wireless technologies.
The agreement seeks to simplify the deployment of 5G within tactical systems, thereby improving the reliability and interoperability of battlefield communications. The companies will also explore opportunities for developing tactical 5G capabilities, integrating them with unmanned systems and sensors, and participating in European defense initiatives.
Looking ahead, the partners plan to investigate future technologies, including Nokia’s 6G "network as a sensor" concept. Such advancements are expected to bolster situational awareness and military readiness in evolving operational environments.
This partnership facilitates the accelerated adoption of commercial telecommunication solutions within defense applications by combining Nokia's industry-standard technology expertise with Kongsberg's tactical communication assets. Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia, noted that many Nokia products are inherently dual-use, serving both commercial and military needs.
