Nokia and Liberty Global test network-as-a-service in Antwerp port

Nokia and Liberty Global have partnered, with Liberty Global's Belgian subsidiary Telenet utilizing Nokia's Network as Code platform to enhance maritime use cases at the busy Port of Antwerp. The initiative aims to improve the port's operational efficiency and service offerings.

In a recent trial conducted at the port, the companies demonstrated how Telenet's 5G Standalone network facilitated high-definition video streaming to remotely located captains. This capability assists captains in maneuvering vessels more safely and efficiently through congested areas, leveraging real-time data and ultra-low latency.

The trial, part of Liberty Global's Network as a Service (NaaS) program, involved Belgian partners Seafar NV and imec. Nokia's platform was integrated with imec's edge application middleware, connecting vessel requirements to the 5G network and Seafar's Shore Control Center.

This collaboration aligns with the GSMA's Open Gateway initiative, which standardizes APIs to accelerate development. The technology allows on-demand network resource usage without expensive dedicated infrastructure, offering granular control and flexibility.

The partnership seeks to expand simplified network capabilities for developers at the port, enabling the creation of new applications. The technology is scheduled for demonstration at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
