Nokia and Samsung Sign 5G Patent License Agreement
Nokia and Samsung have signed a new patent license agreement covering 5G and other technologies. Samsung will make royalty payments to Nokia over a multi-year period, starting January 1, 2023.
Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced on January 23, 2023, that it has entered into a new cross-license patent agreement with Samsung. The agreement, which covers Nokia's fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies, commenced on January 1, 2023, following the expiry of the previous deal at the end of 2022.
Under the terms of the agreement, Samsung will make royalty payments to Nokia for a multi-year period. The specific financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
Nokia's patent portfolio is built upon over €130 billion invested in research and development since 2000, comprising approximately 20,000 patent families, including over 4,500 declared essential for 5G. The company stated that this agreement is consistent with its previously disclosed long-term outlook for Nokia Technologies.
The deal allows both companies the freedom to innovate. Samsung is a major player in the smartphone industry, and this agreement ensures continued access to essential technologies for its product development and sales.
