Nokia Bell Labs develops optimization model for 5G network slicing

Researchers at Nokia Bell Labs have published a methodology to improve resource provisioning in 5G networks, focusing on balancing service demands and infrastructure capacity.

3 November 2026

Nokia Bell Labs has unveiled a new resource provisioning method designed to optimize how 5G networks manage network slicing. As infrastructure providers increasingly share hardware resources across multiple service providers, ensuring consistent performance and coverage remains a significant operational challenge.

The research proposes an approach that uses Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to aggregate resource demands. By evaluating computing, storage, and rate constraints within a graph-based model, the method allows operators to map service function chains more efficiently than traditional best-effort approaches.

Simulation results indicate that this coverage-aware approach provides better resource management compared to direct slice embedding strategies. The methodology aims to help infrastructure providers satisfy strict service level agreements while managing the increasing traffic demands associated with modern 5G deployments.
