Nokia Bell Labs Publishes on Higher-Order Modulation Formats

Nokia Bell Labs has published a book chapter reviewing concepts and enabling devices for higher-order modulation formats in optical transmission.

18 October 2026

Nokia Bell Labs has released a book chapter that reviews the concepts and enabling devices for higher-order modulation formats within optical transmission. The publication examines current and future coherent transceiver technologies.

Higher-order modulation formats, such as DP-MQAM, are crucial for increasing data transmission speeds in optical networks. These formats are generated at the transmitter using digital-to-analog converters (DAC) and I/Q modulators, integrated with digital signal processing (DSP). On the receiver side, a coherent receiver frontend coupled with ADCs and DSP is employed for signal decoding.

The chapter provides a detailed look at the implementation and development of these technologies. It offers an expert perspective on the research and advancements in the field, focusing on the hardware components necessary for achieving faster and more efficient optical communication systems.

This publication is part of Nokia Bell Labs' ongoing commitment to advancing optical transmission technologies, aiming to address the growing global demand for data capacity.
