Nokia Oyj's Bell Labs researchers have published a new study introducing a Grassmannian product codebook method for limited feedback Massive MIMO systems with two-tier precoding.

The publication addresses challenges in frequency-division duplex full-dimension Massive MIMO systems, specifically the acquisition of sufficiently accurate channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. The research proposes a novel dual-stage Grassmannian product quantization approach suitable for high-dimensional CSI quantization and feedback.

The method is applied to two-tier precoding architectures that employ channel-subspace based outer-tier precoding strategies. The study suggests the method is effective when the channel can be decomposed in the angular domain, enabling efficient CSI compression through DFT codebooks.

Bell Labs' dual-stage product codebook quantization method aims to mitigate the inefficiency of oversampled DFT codebooks for growing codebook sizes. This is achieved by varying the intermediate quantization dimension of the proposed dual-stage quantizer.
