Nokia deploys energy-efficient O-RAN 5G network with NTT DOCOMO
Nokia is deploying its energy-efficient, multi-supplier O-RAN 5G network solution for Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO. The deployment supports the operator's sustainability objectives and enables more open network architectures.
Espoo, Finland – Telecommunications company Nokia announced Monday that it is deploying its Open RAN (O-RAN) compliant 5G AirScale baseband solution, including Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) software, for Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO. The solution will be deployed across DOCOMO's commercial network nationwide.
Nokia's solution enables DOCOMO's pursuit of a multi-supplier strategy, offering the flexibility to connect with radio units from other vendors. The company highlights that Nokia's energy-efficient AirScale portfolio is intended to support DOCOMO's sustainability goals while also reducing total cost of ownership.
Nokia and DOCOMO are long-term partners in the development of open networks. The collaboration on O-RAN technology deepens this partnership and supports the O-RAN Alliance's goals for building open and interoperable networks for the 5G era.
Nokia's "anyRAN" approach aims to provide operators with flexibility in building their network solutions. It allows for the combination of dedicated, hybrid, and cloud-native network environments with common software. In this deployment, Nokia's baseband solutions can be combined with radio units from both Nokia and third parties, ensuring a smooth transition towards various network implementations.
