Nokia deploys multi-gigabit fiber broadband for Valoo in Finland
Nokia is deploying a 10 Gbit/s fiber broadband network for Finnish operator Valoo. The deal includes central office fiber access nodes and network management software, aiming to connect 200,000 homes in approximately 30 cities by the end of 2026.
Nokia Oyj has announced a deployment of a 10 gigabit (Gbit/s) fiber broadband network for Finnish operator Valoo. The agreement encompasses fiber access nodes for central offices and Nokia's Altiplano broadband access controller, which features software-defined networking (SDAN) capabilities.
This project represents Nokia's first comprehensive XGS-PON solution deployment in Finland. The initiative aims to connect a total of 200,000 homes across roughly 30 cities by the close of 2026. Valoo, owned by the infrastructure equity fund DIF Capital Partners, focuses on fiber broadband access and is undertaking large-scale fiber network developments in Finland.
The XGS-PON deployment, powered by Nokia's Quillion chipset, is designed to be ready for future upgrades to 25 Gbit/s speeds. Valoo highlights the solution's energy efficiency, noting its carbon footprint is 95 percent smaller compared to traditional point-to-point solutions. Valoo plans to begin delivering the new connections to customers this spring.
Valoo CEO Tommi Linna stated that Nokia's solution provides customers with cutting-edge technology, enabling speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s in the future. He also mentioned the Altiplano controller's role in bringing open network solutions to the Finnish market. Sandy Motley, President of Fixed Networks at Nokia, added that the Altiplano controller establishes a foundation for automation in broadband access networks, which is crucial for operators seeking innovation and operational cost control.
