Nokia Extends 5G Reach with Microwave Transport Solutions

Nokia Oyj is improving the reach and performance of 5G networks through its advanced microwave transport solutions. The company is addressing the need for robust connectivity and capacity, particularly in challenging urban environments and remote rural locations where fiber deployment may be impractical or costly.

Microwave links constitute a significant portion of mobile network backhaul, exceeding 50% of traffic due to their cost-effectiveness and rapid deployment capabilities, especially compared to fiber optics. Nokia's Wavence portfolio offers scalable microwave transport solutions designed for a variety of deployment needs, including industrial sectors and public services requiring critical connectivity.

For dense urban areas, Nokia's Wavence Ultra Broadband Transceiver millimeter wave (UBT-m) XP radios deliver up to 20 Gbps throughput and high output power to meet future capacity demands. The compact UBT-m Urban model is designed for space-constrained urban sites, reducing installation complexity and visual impact.

In rural and remote locations, microwave transport enables cost-effective expansion of 5G coverage. Nokia's Wavence solutions support long-distance links and high speeds across multiple frequency bands. The company also emphasizes energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact through innovations like application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and software features that optimize power consumption and enhance network performance using techniques such as multi-band Carrier Aggregation.
