Nokia Proposes 'Network as Code' as New 5G Currency

Nokia Oyj has put forward the concept of 'Network as Code,' suggesting it could become the primary driver for monetizing 5G technology. The company argues that by treating network capabilities as software code, service providers can unlock new revenue streams and stimulate a digital ecosystem centered around 5G services.

The company draws a parallel between 'Network as Code' and the historical evolution of currency, which facilitated speedier and more trustworthy exchanges, thereby fostering economic growth. Similarly, Nokia believes that by making network functions accessible and manageable through code, it will simplify the creation and deployment of 5G services, benefiting all participants including network operators, partners, and application developers.

'Network as Code' is envisioned to empower application developers by allowing them to integrate specific network capabilities directly into their applications. This shift from a hardware-centric view to a software-driven approach is expected to lead to more adaptive and user-centric applications, especially for enterprise and industrial use cases leveraging edge computing, such as in remote healthcare or advanced robotics.

Nokia anticipates that over 80 percent of the value derived from 5G will stem from service creation within this evolving digital ecosystem. 'Network as Code' is positioned as the key enabler for this value creation, simplifying access and development for a wide range of new consumer and enterprise services.
