Nokia Research Analyzes VoIP Performance Over UMTS Networks
Nokia Bell Labs investigated the delay performance of Voice over IP (VoIP) services over 3G systems' high-speed downlink shared channel. The analysis provides a baseline for designing next-generation mobile architectures.
Nokia Oyj's research division, Nokia Bell Labs, has published a study examining the performance of Voice over IP (VoIP) calls over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. The research evaluates network capacity for VoIP traffic under various delay budgets associated with the radio access network channel.
The publication specifically focuses on the delay performance of the UMTS Downlink Shared Packet Channel, such as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), which is designed for high-speed packet data services. The aim was to determine how different delay requirements impact call quality and overall network capacity.
This analysis provides essential insights for the architectural design of future mobile networks, including Radio Network Controllers (RNC) and NodeB. The findings can inform the development of upcoming mobile technologies, ensuring high-quality voice services even in demanding data environments.
The study was released on October 9, 2003, as part of Nokia Bell Labs' ongoing efforts to advance mobile communication technologies.
