Nokia Shaped Video Services Standards

Helsinki – Nokia Oyj has significantly influenced the global development of digital video services through its technical innovations and standardization efforts. The company's contributions to defining video codecs and streaming formats have enabled modern video streaming across televisions, computers, and mobile devices.

Nokia's engineers have been central figures in standards bodies such as ITU-T and the MPEG group, developing crucial video codecs. The company's work began in the early 2000s when it recognized the potential of mobile phones as multimedia devices. Realizing this vision required radical advancements in video compression technology.

Nokia was a key player in the development of the H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard in 2003. This standard debuted just as smartphones began to emerge and faster mobile networks were rolled out, initiating the mobile video revolution. The company stated this standard would form the foundation for countless consumer, enterprise, and industrial devices.

Later, anticipating the rise of user-generated content and real-time video communication, Nokia championed the H.265/High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard in 2013. This standard laid the groundwork for video conferencing and video sharing applications, enabling Ultra-High Definition 4K video quality and efficiency. Nokia's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards, highlighting its substantial role in media technology and communication advancements.
