Nokia to Build New Middle East Network for GBI

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced it has been selected by Gulf Bridge International (GBI) to construct a new high-capacity terrestrial optical network. The project aims to enhance GBI's regional optical infrastructure with advanced technology, enabling faster and more reliable access to digital services across the Middle East.

The new network, designed to be scalable and low-latency, will support services ranging from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps. This upgrade is expected to boost network resilience and performance for cloud providers, enterprises, and telecom operators. A key feature is the establishment of a new terrestrial route through Iraq, offering an alternative pathway to traditional subsea cable corridors.

Nokia will supply its 1830 Global Express (GX) optical platform for the deployment. GBI CEO Ahmad Mohamed AL-Kuwari stated that the agreement marks a significant step in improving regional connectivity and supporting digital transformation. Roque Lozano, Nokia's Senior Vice President for Network Infrastructure in the Middle East and Africa, noted that the partnership will shape the region's next phase of digital growth.

Upon completion, the network is projected to deliver over 50 terabits of capacity to GBI's customers, catering to the region's expanding digital economy and increasing demand for bandwidth. The new terrestrial route is intended to provide greater diversity and reliability for regional and international data traffic.
